Why California’s minimum car insurance might not be enough

Had a client a few years back who thought the minimum was fine—until a fender bender turned into a five-car pileup. His coverage ran out fast, and he ended up paying off the rest for years. It’s wild how quick those costs add up. Sometimes “just enough” really isn’t.

Yeah, I’ve been there—thought the minimum would cover me, but after a rear-end accident with more than one car involved, it was a wake-up call. Here’s how I look at it now: 1) Check what your policy actually covers, not just the numbers. 2) Think about how much a hospital bill or car repair can really cost. 3) If you drive a lot (or have points on your record like me), the risk just goes up. Minimums might seem cheaper, but one bad day and you’re stuck paying for years... Not worth the gamble, honestly.

Man, I hear you on this. I used to think the minimum was fine too—felt like, hey, it’s legal, right? But then my buddy got into a fender bender that turned into a whole mess because the other car had three people in it and suddenly everyone’s talking medical bills. The insurance barely scratched the surface and he’s still paying off some of it. It’s wild how fast those costs add up.

I get wanting to save money on premiums, though. Honestly, I still kind of grumble every time I pay mine. But after seeing what can happen, I’d rather pay a little more each month than risk getting buried by bills later. Not saying everyone needs the max coverage, but yeah... those minimums are kinda misleading.

Props for sharing your experience—it’s easy to think “that won’t happen to me” until it does.

That’s exactly it—the numbers look fine on paper, but real life doesn’t play by those rules. I used to commute with just the minimum because, honestly, it’s expensive enough out here already. But after seeing a coworker go through a similar situation (rear-ended someone, bills way over coverage), I bumped mine up. The monthly difference was less than a couple takeout meals, and it just feels like cheap peace of mind now. Those hospital bills are no joke... even for minor stuff. It’s wild.

Yeah, it’s wild how fast those costs add up. I’ve seen people think they’re saving money with the minimum, but one accident and it’s like... was it really worth it? I’m curious—did you look at uninsured motorist coverage too, or just bump up liability? Out here, seems like there’s always someone driving around with no insurance at all.
