Why California’s minimum car insurance might not be enough

Honestly, I’ve seen folks get burned thinking “minimum” means “enough.” Here’s the deal:

- California’s liability minimums haven’t kept up with real-world repair or medical costs.
- One bad accident and you’re on the hook for thousands over your policy limit—seen it happen to someone who thought they had nothing to lose, but ended up with their paycheck docked for years.
- Even if you’re driving a $2k car, a new SUV or luxury ride you hit can rack up insane bills fast.

I get wanting to save cash, but sometimes the cheapest policy isn’t really cheaper in the long run. Just my two cents.

Honestly, I don’t get why people gamble with the bare minimum. Have you seen the cost of a fender bender these days? Even a minor scrape on a Tesla or BMW can run you thousands. And if someone gets hurt, forget it—medical bills are wild. I’d rather pay a bit more each month than risk losing my wages over one mistake. Is saving $10-20 a month really worth that stress? Doesn’t add up for me.

Honestly, I get where you’re coming from, but I’m still on the fence. Just got my first car and the quotes for higher coverage are kinda rough on my budget. I know repairs are expensive, but when you’re counting every dollar, that extra $20 a month adds up fast. Still, hearing stories about crazy repair bills does make me nervous... not sure what’s worse, paying more now or risking it later.

I totally get the sticker shock—when I was fresh out of college, every extra dollar felt like a big deal. But after my cousin got rear-ended and the other driver’s insurance barely covered half the damage, I started looking at it differently. That $20 a month stings, but one accident can wipe out your savings way faster. It’s not fun, but sometimes paying a bit more now saves you a ton of stress (and cash) down the road.

Honestly, I see this all the time—people think the minimum is enough until something actually happens. Here’s the thing:

- California’s minimums are pretty low compared to real-world repair costs.
- If you total someone’s new car or there’s a medical claim, you could be on the hook for thousands out of pocket.
- That extra $20 a month? It’s basically buying peace of mind. Not fun, but neither is draining your savings because the coverage ran out.

I get why folks want to save, but the risk just isn’t worth it in my book.
