It’s wild how many folks think minimum coverage means “I’m good, I checked the box.” But like, have you ever actually looked at what $5,000 in property damage covers in LA? That’s not even a headlight on some of these cars. What happens if you rear-end a Tesla or—worse—a Mercedes S-Class? Suddenly you’re pulling out the calculator and sweating bullets.
And then there’s medical bills. Ever peeked at an ER bill lately? Even a minor fender bender can turn into a neck injury that costs more than your last vacation. Is it worth risking your savings or getting your wages garnished over trying to save a few bucks a month?
I get why people want to pay the bare minimum, especially with how expensive everything is here. But is it really “cheaper” if one weird day costs you years of payments? Sometimes I wonder if folks realize the minimums were set decades ago...back when cars cost less than my current phone. Just something to chew on next time you see that premium quote and wince.
Honestly, I get the urge to save money, but after seeing my neighbor get sued over a minor accident, I just can’t risk it. One ER visit and you’re in the hole for years. The “minimum” feels like a gamble I’m not willing to take, especially with kids in the car.
Had a similar debate with myself when I picked up my ‘72 Chevelle. The minimum sounded tempting, but after seeing a buddy’s classic get rear-ended and the insurance barely covered half the repairs, I changed my mind quick. Even if you’re careful, it’s just not worth the risk—especially with older cars that cost more to fix. I’d rather skip a few upgrades and pay for better coverage.
Had a similar thought process when I got my '68 Mustang. At first, I figured minimum was fine since I don't drive it much, but seeing repair quotes for even minor fender benders changed my mind real fast.
That really hits home. Have you guys found any insurers that actually understand the value of classics, or is it all just inflated premiums across the board?“Even if you’re careful, it’s just not worth the risk—especially with older cars that cost more to fix.”

Couldn’t agree more. I learned the hard way—got rear-ended in my ‘72 Charger and minimum coverage barely scratched the surface. Hagerty’s been decent for agreed value, but yeah, premiums aren’t cheap. Still beats paying out of pocket for rare parts.
