Why California’s minimum car insurance might not be enough

Honestly, I’ve had the opposite experience once—total nightmare with all the calls, but after I switched to a smaller insurance company, things moved way faster. Maybe it’s not just California, but the big companies being overloaded? Still, those minimums are rough if you get unlucky.

Totally get what you mean about the smaller company—sometimes you actually get a real person instead of being stuck in call center limbo. About those minimums though... They look cheap until you realize how fast $15k or $30k can disappear if you’re in a multi-car accident or someone gets hurt. I’ve seen folks who thought they were saving money end up with crazy bills after an accident. Not fun at all. Sometimes bumping up coverage a bit doesn’t cost as much as people think, especially if you shop around or raise the deductible a little. Just my two cents from seeing some horror stories play out.

Yeah, this is exactly what’s freaking me out as I shop around. I keep seeing the “minimum” numbers and thinking, okay, that sounds like enough… but then I read stories about people getting stuck with medical bills or lawsuits way over those limits. It’s wild how fast those costs add up. I’m leaning toward bumping up my coverage just for peace of mind—even if it means skipping a couple lattes a month.

I totally get where you’re coming from. When I first started driving, I just picked the cheapest option because, well, money was tight. But after a friend got rear-ended and ended up owing way more than her policy covered, I realized how risky that was. Have you looked into how much extra it actually costs to bump up your liability? For me, it was less than I expected—like, not even the price of a streaming subscription each month. Curious if anyone’s ever had to use their higher coverage in a real situation?

Same here. I ran the numbers and increasing my liability limits barely moved my premium, especially compared to what repairs or lawsuits could cost if you hit a high-end car or someone gets seriously injured. With the cars on the road these days, minimum coverage just doesn’t cut it. Even a minor accident can get expensive fast. I’d rather pay a bit more up front than risk my assets later.
