- Totally get what you mean about the risk.
-

“you could still get sued for the difference”
— that part kinda freaks me out.
- I keep thinking, what are the odds I’d actually need more? But then again, even a fender bender can spiral if someone claims injury.
- My friend had minimum coverage and ended up paying out of pocket after a minor accident. Not sure I want to gamble like that, but the extra cost is tough to swallow.
- Still debating if it’s worth stretching my budget for more coverage or just hoping for the best...

Title: Why California’s minimum car insurance might not be enough

Honestly, I keep hearing stories like your friend’s and it just makes me nervous. I get that the extra coverage isn’t cheap, but minimum really feels like playing with fire. I mean, one bad day and you’re stuck paying off someone’s medical bills for years? No thanks.

I’m still on my parents’ policy (student life perks), but I looked at the numbers if I had to go solo. The difference between minimum and something more reasonable isn’t nothing, but compared to how much a lawsuit could cost… it’s kinda a no-brainer for me. Like, I’d rather eat more ramen than risk getting sued for tens of thousands.

I know some people never have a problem with minimum and maybe they’re just lucky or drive way less than me. But every time I’m in traffic and someone cuts me off, I just picture the worst-case scenario. It’s not even about being a bad driver—sometimes you’re just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Stretching the budget sucks, but being broke because of one accident sounds worse. If you can swing it, even bumping up coverage a little seems smarter than hoping for the best. That’s just me though... I overthink everything.

Yeah, I’m with you on this. I just bought my first car and when I saw how low the minimums are, it honestly freaked me out. My cousin got rear-ended last year and the other guy’s insurance barely covered half her hospital bills. She’s still fighting with them. I’d rather pay a bit more each month than end up in that mess. The “it won’t happen to me” mindset just doesn’t cut it when you see how fast things can go sideways.

Honestly, I used to think the minimum was fine—until I did the math. One ER visit and you’re toast. I get wanting to save money, but those minimums are like wearing flip-flops in a snowstorm... technically something, but not really doing the job. I’d rather skip a couple lattes a month than risk getting buried in bills.

Not gonna lie, I used to roll my eyes at “more coverage” talk, but after seeing a friend get hit with a $40k bill from a fender bender (yep, just a fender bender), it made me rethink things. Have you ever actually looked at what those minimums cover? It’s wild how little it is. Is saving $20 a month really worth the gamble? I mean, maybe if you never drive... but who’s that lucky?
