sometimes the state minimums won’t go far if you actually get in a bigger accident

Man, I learned this the hard way. Had a fender bender last year (not my proudest moment), and the other guy’s car was way fancier than my beat-up Corolla. My insurance barely covered his repairs, and I got stuck with a bill for the rest. State minimums felt like Monopoly money at that point. Now I pay a bit more, but at least I sleep better... kinda.

I get where you’re coming from. My last accident was with someone who had the minimum, and let’s just say my repair bill looked like a phone number. When you drive something that costs more than some houses, state minimums are basically useless. I know it’s tempting to save a few bucks, but one bad day and you’ll wish you’d bumped up your coverage. It’s not just about your own car either—liability can get wild if you hit something expensive (or someone).

Yeah, I looked at the minimums and honestly, it just feels like playing with fire. My cousin went cheap on his policy, then rear-ended a Tesla... dude’s still paying that off. I’d rather skip a few coffees a month than risk that nightmare.

Yeah, I hear you. I drive a pretty pricey car myself, and honestly, the thought of someone tapping my bumper with minimum coverage gives me anxiety. Repairs aren’t cheap—one time a guy barely scratched my fender and the bill was wild. I get wanting to save money, but those minimums just don’t cut it if you’re around expensive cars all day. Skipping a few lattes is way better than getting stuck with a massive bill for years... your cousin’s story is exactly why I upped my coverage.

I get where you’re coming from, but I’m always torn on this. On one hand, yeah, the minimums are low and if you hit a Tesla or something, you’re probably in trouble. But on the other hand, I’ve had full coverage for years and barely used it—just a couple of minor claims. Sometimes I wonder if I’m just throwing money away every month for “what ifs.”

I do agree that repair costs are nuts now, even for small stuff. My neighbor’s Camry got rear-ended and the quote was almost $3k for a bumper and sensors. That’s not even a luxury car. Still, I can’t help but think there’s a line between being prepared and over-insuring.

Curious—has anyone actually had to pay out of pocket because their insurance didn’t cover enough? Or is it mostly just the fear of that happening that drives people to get more coverage? I feel like the insurance companies bank on us being anxious about worst-case scenarios, but maybe that’s just me being skeptical...
