"defensive driving classes help a little with minor stuff like speeding tickets, but for something heavy like a DUI... nah, it's barely gonna make a dent."

Gotta disagree slightly here. Sure, defensive driving classes alone won't magically erase the impact of a DUI—it's still gonna sting. But from what I've seen, combining them with an SR-22 filing and being proactive about enrolling in alcohol awareness programs can sometimes soften the blow. Won't work miracles obviously, but insurers do notice genuine effort. Shopping around is smart too, but don't underestimate the value of showing you're serious about changing habits... might make a difference down the line.

Yeah, defensive driving classes alone won't exactly turn a DUI into a minor hiccup... but pairing them with other steps can help ease the insurance hit. Have you checked if your insurer offers discounts or incentives for completing alcohol education courses or counseling programs? Some do, surprisingly. And honestly, shopping around is key—rates after a DUI vary wildly between providers, so don't just stick to your usual company out of habit. Might save you more than you'd think.

When my brother got a DUI a few years back, he assumed his rates would skyrocket permanently. He did the alcohol education program and switched insurers after shopping around—ended up paying less than he initially feared. Still pricey, but manageable. Definitely worth exploring options carefully.

Had a similar situation with my cousin about two years ago. He freaked out at first, thinking he'd be paying crazy rates forever. After he did the classes and shopped around (took him a while, he's picky lol), he found an insurer that wasn't as harsh on DUIs. Still higher than before, but nothing like the horror stories you hear. Definitely pays to do your homework and compare quotes carefully—some companies are way more forgiving than others.

Yeah, that's pretty spot-on advice. The impact of a DUI on insurance in CA can vary dramatically depending on the insurer and your specific situation. Did your cousin end up filing an SR-22? Usually, that's required here in California after a DUI, and it can definitely bump up your rates for at least three years.

Also curious—did he try looking into any smaller or regional insurers? Sometimes the big national companies have stricter underwriting policies, while smaller providers might be more flexible with risk assessment. I've seen cases where people saved quite a bit by switching to lesser-known insurers who specialize in high-risk drivers.

And you're right about shopping around... quotes can differ by hundreds of dollars per year for the exact same coverage. Did he also bundle his policies or take advantage of any discounts (like defensive driving classes)? Those little things can add up over time and soften the blow a bit.
