Car insurance discussions and local services.
finally found an insurance company in CA that doesn't drive me nuts
"Definitely makes you think twice before filing those tiny claims..."
Totally agree with this. Did you notice any change in your driving habits after upping the deductible? When I switched from $500 to $1,500 deductible on my car (which is a bit pricier to repair), I initially worried I'd regret it too. But honestly, it made me a little more cautious behind the wheel - maybe subconsciously knowing I'd have to cover more myself if something happened? Either way, it's been worth it financially. The savings each month really add up, and I've been lucky enough to avoid any major incidents so far. Still, every time I hear that dreaded "ding" from gravel or debris on the freeway, I cringe a bit wondering if it'll be expensive... Has anyone else found themselves being extra careful or even parking differently after raising their deductible?
Yeah, raising the deductible can definitely shift your mindset. I've seen a lot of folks get a bit more cautious after upping theirs - parking further from crowded spots, maybe easing off the gas pedal just a tad. But honestly, it's usually short-lived. After a while, most people settle back into old habits...until that first big scratch reminds them again. Still, sounds like you're handling it pretty well overall, so that's encouraging.
"After a while, most people settle back into old habits...until that first big scratch reminds them again."
Haha, this is painfully accurate. Here's my foolproof guide to deductible-induced caution:
Step 1: Raise deductible, feel instantly responsible.
Step 2: Park at the far end of every lot, even if it means hiking half a mile.
Step 3: Gradually convince yourself "it's probably fine" to park closer.
Step 4: Get that inevitable scratch or ding.
Step 5: Repeat steps 1-4 indefinitely.
Been stuck in this loop for years...glad I'm not alone.
Haha, your steps are spot-on, but honestly, I think there's a better way to break that cycle. I've been there too - parking my car miles away from civilization just to avoid door dings. But after a while, I realized it's less about the deductible and more about mindset.
Instead of constantly raising deductibles and stressing over every scratch, I found it helpful to invest in some quality paint protection film (PPF). Yeah, it's an upfront cost, but it genuinely reduces anxiety. Now when I park closer, I'm not constantly paranoid about shopping carts or careless drivers. Plus, it preserves resale value if that's something you care about.
Not saying it's a perfect solution - nothing is - but it definitely helped me relax a bit and actually enjoy driving again. Might be worth looking into if you're tired of repeating steps 1-5 forever...
I totally get the mindset shift you're talking about. A few years back, I was exactly the same - parking way out in the boonies just to avoid those dreaded door dings. Then one day, after lugging groceries across half the parking lot in pouring rain, I thought, "This is ridiculous." I didn't go the PPF route (though I've heard good things), but I did start looking at my car differently.
Instead of treating it like a museum piece, I reminded myself it's meant to be driven and enjoyed. I still take care of it, wash it regularly, wax occasionally, but I've accepted that minor scratches and dings are just part of owning a car. Funny enough, once I stopped worrying so much, I actually started noticing fewer incidents - maybe because I wasn't obsessively checking every panel after each trip.
PPF sounds great if you can swing it, but for me, just adjusting my expectations and being practical about wear and tear made a huge difference. It's nice not having that constant anxiety every time I park somewhere busy...
