Just moved to California a couple months ago, and I'm still trying to figure out all the car stuff. I heard from a coworker that you can't register your car here unless you already have insurance, but then someone else said you can't get insurance without registering first. Um, which one is it? Feels like a chicken-and-egg situation, you know?
Also, my current insurance is from out-of-state, and I'm not sure if that's valid here or if I need to switch ASAP. I don't wanna get pulled over and find out the hard way. Anyone dealt with this recently or know how strict they are about this stuff? Any tips or advice would be awesome, cause the DMV website is kinda confusing me more than helping right now.
Yeah, CA can be a bit picky about this stuff. You actually need proof of insurance first before you can register your carβno chicken-and-egg here, just insurance first. Your out-of-state policy might cover you temporarily, but most insurers require you to update your address pretty quick once you move. I'd switch ASAP to avoid headaches...trust me, learned that the hard way after a friendly chat with CHP.
