Does car insurance help when a car breaks down?
If a car needs a tow because of a mechanical failure, does a standard Virginia auto policy usually cover the tow, or only certain situations? I’m also trying to understand the distinction between roadside assistance and mechanical-breakdown coverage: roadside might arrange a tow, while the repair bill itself could be a separate matter.
Does comprehensive or collision generally exclude the cost of fixing a mechanical failure, even if the car can’t be driven? Which policy terms should I check to see what towing covers and whether a separate breakdown plan is included?

A standard auto policy doesn’t necessarily include a tow for mechanical failure; check whether roadside assistance or towing and labor is included. Look for a dollar or per-event limit and whether the insurer reimburses you or dispatches a provider. That coverage may help with the tow, but it doesn’t mean the policy will pay to repair the mechanical failure.
