Do I really need extra insurance when renting a car in VA?

I used to think my credit card had me totally covered, too - until I actually read the fine print. Turns out, it didn’t cover “loss of use” fees from the rental company. Learned that the hard way after a fender bender in a parking lot. Sometimes that extra insurance is just peace of mind, especially if you’re renting somewhere unfamiliar.

That “loss of use” fee is sneaky, right? A lot of folks assume their credit card covers everything, but those exclusions can really bite you. I always tell people to check if their own auto policy extends to rentals - sometimes it does, sometimes not. In Virginia, the rental companies can be pretty strict about those extra charges. If you’re on a tight budget, it’s worth weighing the risk versus the cost of the extra insurance. Ever notice how the peace of mind sometimes costs less than one day’s worth of stress?

Honestly, I get why people want that extra peace of mind, but I’ve skipped the rental insurance plenty of times and never had an issue. My own car insurance covers rentals, and I double-checked the fine print just to be sure. Those “loss of use” fees are annoying, but if you’re careful and know what your policy covers, you can save a chunk of change. Sometimes it feels like the rental desk folks are just trying to upsell you on stuff you don’t really need. I’d rather put that money toward a nicer dinner on my trip.

I hear you on the upsell - those rental counters can feel like a gauntlet sometimes. I used to always decline the extra insurance too, since my policy covered rentals, but one time in Richmond I got a tiny door ding and ended up in a paperwork spiral with both companies. Not a disaster, just a hassle. Still, I usually skip it unless I'm somewhere unfamiliar or driving something fancy. That dinner money is way better spent on barbecue than on insurance fees, for sure.

I get what you mean about the paperwork nightmare. For me, the extra insurance is almost a must - my driving record’s not exactly spotless, and my regular policy has a high deductible. Last time I rented in VA, I actually did the math: if I got even a minor scrape, the out-of-pocket would’ve been way more than the daily insurance fee. Does anyone else feel like the risk calculation changes if you’ve had a few tickets or fender benders? I always wonder if I’m just being overly cautious or if it’s justified.
