Why does insurance cost more in Houston than Austin or Dallas?

Man, I feel you on this. My rate jumped after a minor fender bender last year, and it was already high before that. Houston just seems cursed for insurance—between the crazy rain, all the construction, and people driving like they’re in a video game, it’s rough. I tried bundling with home insurance and barely saved anything. At this point, I just cross my fingers every renewal...

I hear you, but is it really THAT much worse than Dallas? I mean, I’ve driven through both and honestly, Dallas has its own wild drivers and traffic jams. Maybe the flooding tips it over the edge in Houston. Ever notice if your rate actually changes by zip code? I moved from Midtown to the Heights and my premium barely budged. Makes me wonder how much is just insurance companies doing their thing...

I moved from Dallas to Houston for school, and my insurance jumped like $40 a month. Didn’t matter that I was in a “nicer” area either. I think the flooding and all the uninsured drivers here just make it worse, honestly. Dallas traffic is nuts, but Houston’s got its own brand of chaos.

Honestly, I get what you’re saying about the flooding and uninsured drivers, but I’m not totally convinced that’s the whole story. I moved here last year and my rate only went up like $10, and I’m in a pretty busy part of town. Maybe it’s just the company you’re with? I shopped around a bit and some quotes were way higher than others. Houston’s wild, but I feel like insurance companies just use any excuse to bump up prices.

That’s interesting—my experience was a bit different. I did some comparison shopping too, but even the lower quotes were noticeably higher than what I paid in Dallas. I wonder if it’s also tied to how often claims get filed in certain zip codes or maybe even the type of car you drive? It feels like there are just so many variables at play. Have you noticed any big differences in coverage options between companies here? Sometimes the “cheaper” plans leave out stuff I’d rather have, especially with Houston weather being so unpredictable...
