I get what you mean about those courses helping you notice road hazards more, but honestly, I felt like mine was mostly common sense stuff. Maybe it depends on the course you take? Mine was super repetitive and didn't really change my driving habits much. Still got the discount though, so I guess that's something.

Also, narrating your driving isn't weird exactly, but it definitely feels awkward when someone else is in the car. My friend called me out on it once and now I try to keep my internal checklist...well, internal. But hey, whatever keeps us safe and saves money on insurance is worth a little embarrassment, right?

I totally get the awkwardness about narrating your driving—been there myself. One thing I've found helpful (and less embarrassing) is turning that narration into a quick mental checklist at key moments, like intersections or lane changes. It keeps you alert without feeling like you're giving a TED Talk to your passengers. And yeah, those courses vary a lot. Mine was decent, but honestly, just regularly reviewing defensive driving tips online can be just as effective—and free.

True, online refreshers help, but I'd argue a structured course has its perks. When I restored my first classic, I took one—picked up subtle risk-avoidance habits I'd overlooked online. Might save more in the long run...

Online tips are handy, sure, but do structured courses really justify the cost for everyone? I mean, if you're already budget-conscious and careful behind the wheel, wouldn't consistently reviewing free resources online be enough? I've managed fine just refreshing my memory with online videos and articles every few months...haven't noticed any major gaps yet. Maybe it's more about how seriously you take those refreshers rather than where you get them from?

I get what you're saying, but honestly, structured courses saved my bacon once. A few years back, I thought I was Mr. Careful Driver too—until I got a speeding ticket in my shiny new ride (ouch, wallet still hurts). Took one of those defensive driving courses to lower my insurance premium, and surprisingly, it paid off big-time. Sure, free resources are great, but sometimes insurers only give discounts for certified courses. Might wanna double-check your provider's policy before ruling it out completely...
