What happens if your rideshare app is between trips and you get into an accident?

Man, I had no clue about that gap either until a buddy of mine got sideswiped while just sitting in a parking lot with his app on. His regular insurance bailed too, and he was stuck with a massive deductible from the rideshare company. It’s wild how they split hairs over when you’re “on the job.” I’ve been thinking about that add-on coverage, but honestly, it feels like they nickel and dime you at every turn. Still, probably better than getting stuck with a huge bill...

Yeah, that “gray area” is what freaks me out. I’ve had a couple close calls where I was just waiting for a ping, and it made me wonder - if something happened right then, who’s actually got my back? The rideshare insurance only kicks in with a huge deductible, and my regular policy says nope. Is the add-on coverage really worth it though, or do they just find another way to deny stuff? Feels like you’re always rolling the dice...

Been there, and yeah, it’s a mess. Here’s the deal: when you’re in that “waiting for a ping” zone, your personal insurance usually won’t touch it if they find out you’re logged into the app. The rideshare company’s coverage is barebones then - giant deductible, not much else. I bit the bullet and got the add-on. It’s not perfect, but at least I don’t have to sweat every time I’m sitting idle. If you drive a lot, it’s worth it just for peace of mind. Insurance companies always look for a way out, but having that extra layer beats nothing.

Yeah, that “waiting for a ping” period is the worst for insurance. I’ve got a higher-end car, so I was extra paranoid about this exact scenario. Like you said,

“the rideshare company’s coverage is barebones then - giant deductible, not much else.”
I actually had a buddy who got sideswiped while just sitting in a parking lot between trips, and it turned into a nightmare with both his insurer and the rideshare company pointing fingers. After hearing that, I didn’t hesitate to get the rideshare add-on. It’s not cheap, but honestly, with the value of my car, it’s just not worth the risk.

Yeah, that’s the thing - insurance companies love to play hot potato with responsibility. I get why you went for the add-on. It sucks paying extra, but honestly, it’s way better than getting stuck in a mess if something happens. Peace of mind is worth it, especially with a nice car.
