How do you compare a rental company’s supplemental liability coverage with the liability coverage a personal auto policy may extend to a rental? I’d want to compare the limits and per-day charge, but I’m not sure what exclusions or differences would make the extra coverage worthwhile.

I’d also keep the damage waiver separate, since it addresses damage to the rental car rather than liability to others. How much do state, rental location, and the wording of the personal policy usually change the comparison?

I never thought I'd actually need rental insurance, you know? Always figured it was just another way for companies to squeeze a few extra bucks outta me. But last month, my upstairs neighbor's washing machine decided to flood their apartment - and mine too. Came home from work to find water dripping from the ceiling, soaking my couch, TV, and laptop. Total nightmare.

Luckily, I'd randomly decided to get supplemental rental coverage a few months back after a friend nagged me about it (thanks, Jess!). Honestly didn't think I'd ever use it, but man, am I glad I listened. The insurance covered everything - replacement furniture, electronics, even temporary housing while repairs were done. Saved me thousands of dollars and a ton of stress.

Curious if anyone else has had a similar experience where rental insurance totally came through for them? Or maybe you took a gamble without it and regretted it later...

Saw this news story yesterday about a guy who rented a car on vacation, declined the damage waiver thingy, and then ended up with a huge bill after someone dinged his rental in a parking lot. Apparently, his own insurance didn't cover everything he thought it would, and now he's stuck paying out of pocket. Got me thinking...I usually skip those waivers too because they always seem overpriced and kinda scammy, you know? But now I'm second-guessing myself.

I mean, I get that rental companies probably make a killing off these waivers, but stories like this make me wonder if maybe it's worth the peace of mind. Or is it just fear-mongering to get us to fork over more cash? Curious what everyone else thinks about this - do you usually buy the waiver or risk it and rely on your own insurance?

Usually, I just grit my teeth and pay whatever they ask at the counter, but this time I did some digging beforehand. Curious if anyone else has stumbled onto similar hidden gems or tricks to dodge those crazy fees?

Last weekend I rented a car for a quick road trip, and at the counter they hit me with the usual spiel about adding their insurance coverage. Normally, I just decline because my credit card supposedly covers it, but this time I hesitated and ended up getting their basic coverage. Honestly, it felt like throwing money away at first, but then halfway through the trip, some gravel flew up from a truck and chipped the windshield. Nothing major, but enough to make me glad I wasn't on the hook for repairs.

Now I'm wondering if maybe I've been too quick to dismiss rental company coverage in the past. I mean, yeah, it's pricey and feels like an upsell, but when something actually happens, it seems like it could save a lot of hassle. Curious if anyone else has had similar experiences or if you think it's still mostly a rip-off?
