How much does a minor at-fault claim affect renewal?
Discussion options
If a regional insurer changes a driver’s premium or renewal terms after a minor at-fault claim, how can you tell whether the change is tied to the claim itself, the amount the insurer paid, or the driver’s broader record?
I’d also like to understand how a claim that was reported but paid nothing is treated compared with one that resulted in a payout. Do state rules or policy wording determine whether a surcharge can apply, and should the renewal notice explain the reason for a change? What specific questions would you ask the agent, and what would you compare in quotes from other insurers to separate a claim-related change from ordinary renewal pricing?

For outside quotes, keep the comparison as close to like-for-like as possible: same drivers, vehicles, coverage limits, and deductibles. If an insurer can, ask it to price the application both with and without the claim. That gives you a better sense of the claim’s estimated effect; comparing one new quote with your old premium also captures broader changes in rates and pricing.
