Had to laugh reading this because last year, Geico tried to stick me with a Corolla after my Odyssey got rear-ended. I’ve got four kids and a golden retriever—there’s just no way. I ended up sending them photos of my usual car seats and the trunk full of soccer gear, and after some back and forth, they finally agreed on a minivan rental. It was a pain, but totally worth pushing for what you actually need. The “comparable” thing is always stacked in their favor unless you make some noise.

Had a similar runaround with Progressive, actually. They tried to put me in a compact after my Sienna got sideswiped—three kids, camping gear, no chance. Did you find Geico more flexible once you pushed, or was it just a hassle the whole way? I always wonder if one company’s better about “comparable” rentals, or if they all just hope you’ll settle for less.

That “comparable” rental thing is wild. I’m shopping for my first policy now, and honestly, the more I read, the more it feels like none of them really want to give you what you actually need. My cousin had Geico last year—her minivan got rear-ended, and they tried to stick her with a sedan too. She pushed back hard and eventually got something closer to what she needed, but it took a ton of calls and some serious attitude. Makes me wonder if it’s just standard practice to lowball you at first.

I get that they’re trying to save money, but if you’re paying for coverage that’s supposed to keep your life running smoothly, shouldn’t they at least try? I’m leaning toward Geico just because their quote was a bit lower for me, but stories like these make me nervous. Maybe it’s just about being persistent no matter who you go with... or maybe they’re all kind of the same when it comes down to it.

I’ve had similar concerns, honestly. It’s frustrating when you pay for “comparable” coverage and then have to fight tooth and nail just to get what you actually need. I’ve heard mixed things about both Geico and Progressive in NY—some people swear by one, others have horror stories. Has anyone here actually had a smooth claims process with either? I’m curious if it’s just luck of the draw or if one company really does handle things better when push comes to shove.

I totally get where you’re coming from—it’s tough to know if you’re actually saving money in the long run if you end up fighting for every claim. I’ve had Geico for a few years in NY, and while the rates are decent, I did have to jump through a few hoops after a fender bender. Nothing outrageous, but definitely not “effortless.” Makes me wonder if it’s just luck or if certain agents make a difference? I’ve heard Progressive can be hit or miss too, especially with customer service. Anyone ever see a big difference in out-of-pocket costs between the two? That’s always my main concern.
