Why I was surprised to learn Nebraska requires uninsured motorist coverage

Yeah, I get what you mean—it’s easy to overlook the fine print until you’re in a bind. I’ve handled a bunch of claims where folks thought they were covered for everything, only to find out their policy was barebones. It’s almost always the uninsured/underinsured motorist part that trips people up. A lot of states require it, but the minimums can be surprisingly low compared to what accidents actually cost.

One thing I’ve noticed is people tend to focus on collision and liability, but not so much on the stuff that protects them directly. Funny how priorities shift after you see what happens when someone else doesn’t have insurance. Out of curiosity, did anyone here ever actually read through their policy before signing, or just trust the agent? Sometimes those “extras” are only a few bucks more per month, but make all the difference when things go sideways...

Funny you mention reading the policy—I’ll admit, even after years in this line of work, those documents can be a slog. I always tell people it’s worth at least skimming the sections on coverage limits and exclusions. It’s wild how many folks assume “full coverage” means they’re set for anything, but those uninsured/underinsured limits are often way lower than you’d expect. Honestly, a few extra bucks for better protection usually pays off in peace of mind, if nothing else.

I get where you’re coming from, but honestly, I’ve seen plenty of folks pay for higher limits and never need them. Sometimes it feels like upselling fear. Sure, the peace of mind is great, but if you look at the stats, most claims don’t hit those maxes anyway. Maybe it’s just me, but I’d rather put that extra cash somewhere else unless there’s a real risk factor.

Yeah, I hear you. I’ve always wondered if those higher limits are just a safety net for the super unlucky. I’ve driven through Nebraska a few times and honestly didn’t even realize uninsured motorist was mandatory there. Feels like one of those “better safe than sorry” deals, but I’m with you—unless you’re in a high-risk area or have a reason to worry, it’s hard to justify the extra cost. I’d rather spend that money on gas for another trip.

I get where you’re coming from, but the thing is, even in places that don’t seem “high-risk,” uninsured drivers can be more common than folks realize. Nebraska’s rates aren’t the worst, but they’re not super low either. Have you ever actually checked how many uninsured drivers are out there where you usually drive? Sometimes the stats are surprising...
