Title: Why I was surprised to learn Nebraska requires uninsured motorist coverage

When I first moved here, I was shocked how much my insurance jumped - especially since I drive a higher-end sedan and keep it garaged. Here’s what I did to wrap my head around it:

1. Checked my policy line by line. Turns out, Nebraska’s uninsured motorist coverage is non-negotiable, and the minimums are way higher than where I came from (Missouri).
2. Compared quotes with friends in neighboring states. Wild difference, honestly.
3. Dug into accident stats and local news. There’s a surprising number of hit-and-runs or folks driving without insurance here.

I get why the law exists, but sometimes it feels like those of us who play by the rules are footing the bill for people who don’t bother with coverage at all. Maybe it’s just the cost of “peace of mind,” but it still stings when you see that monthly premium - especially if your car is already expensive to insure.

Anyone else notice that fancier cars seem to get hit harder on rates here? Or am I just paranoid...

Yeah, you’re not imagining it - higher-end cars definitely get dinged harder on rates, especially with Nebraska’s coverage rules. Had a client with a new Audi who was floored by the jump compared to his old Honda. The logic is, pricier cars cost more to repair or replace, and if you’re hit by someone uninsured, the insurance company’s on the hook for a lot more. Doesn’t always feel fair, but that’s how they crunch the numbers...

Yeah, that sticker shock is real. I remember when I tried to insure my old ‘72 Chevelle after restoring it - rates were way higher than my daily driver, even though I barely take it out. Insurance folks just see dollar signs when it comes to repairs, especially with all the tech in newer cars. Nebraska’s rules don’t help much either... but hey, at least if someone hits you and bails, you’re not totally out of luck. Still feels like a racket sometimes.

Tell me about it - my ‘68 Charger’s insurance is almost double what I pay for my truck, and the Charger barely leaves the garage. It’s like they think every classic is a rolling pile of gold. Still, I’d rather pay up than risk getting stiffed by some uninsured clown. Nebraska’s rules are a pain, but at least there’s a safety net if things go sideways.

I get what you mean about the insurance costs - just started shopping around myself, and I was floored by how much more they want for anything labeled “classic.” I guess the logic is that parts are harder to find and repairs cost more, but it still feels a bit over the top when the car barely sees daylight. I’m curious, though: do you guys think it’s worth looking into those agreed value policies for classics? Or is that just another way for them to squeeze more out of us? Also, with Nebraska’s uninsured motorist rules, does anyone know if there’s any wiggle room for cars that aren’t daily drivers? Like, is there a way to prove it’s mostly stored and get a break on premiums? The whole thing’s kind of a maze...
