It sometimes feels like they’re just as confused as we are.

That’s been my experience too, and it drives me nuts. Last year, I tried to get a straight answer from State Farm about coverage for my detached garage—where I keep my ’72 Chevelle—and it was like pulling teeth. The agent kept flipping through his own paperwork like he was seeing it for the first time. Eventually, I got some vague answer about “other structures” coverage, but nothing that made me feel confident.

Honestly, I don’t trust any of them to explain the fine print. They’ll sell you on how “comprehensive” the policy is, but when something happens, suddenly you’re arguing about whether your leaky roof was “sudden” or “gradual.” For me, it always comes down to reading every word myself and even then, I’m not sure I’ve caught everything. Maybe I’m just cynical, but I figure if the agent can’t explain it in plain English, that’s a red flag.

You’re not wrong there. I once had a client ask me if his “man cave” counted as an “other structure” or if it was just his “happy place.” Had to call underwriting just to double-check. Turns out, insurance lingo is about as clear as mud sometimes. Even we get tripped up—especially when the policy reads like it was written by a committee of lawyers after a long lunch.

I hear you on the policy language—sometimes I feel like I need a decoder ring just to figure out what’s covered. I remember reading through my parents’ policy and getting stuck on “appurtenant structures.” Like, does that mean the shed? The fence? The weird gazebo thing my dad built out of leftover deck boards? It’s wild how something so important can be so confusing. Makes me wonder if Shelter or State Farm is any better at keeping things simple... or if it’s just the nature of insurance in general.

That’s exactly the kind of thing that tripped me up too. When I was shopping around, I actually called both Shelter and State Farm to ask about what counts as an “other structure.” Both reps gave me basically the same answer—sheds, fences, detached garages, even a chicken coop if it’s not attached to the house. But honestly, neither company made it super clear in writing. I guess it’s just insurance being...well, insurance. I will say Shelter’s quote was a bit lower for me, but I still had to triple-check every line item before feeling comfortable.
