Confused about Illinois car insurance rules - anyone else?

Rental coverage is one of those things you don’t think about until you’re stuck without wheels. I’ve seen claims get tripped up in Illinois if someone didn’t have comprehensive, or if the rental limit was way lower than actual costs - suddenly you’re paying out of pocket for a bigger car or longer repair. Anyone else run into issues with the daily rental cap not matching real-world prices? It’s wild how quickly those “little” limits add up...

Yeah, the rental caps are kinda a joke.

“the rental limit was way lower than actual costs - suddenly you’re paying out of pocket for a bigger car or longer repair.”
Been there, done that... except my “rental” ended up being my mom’s minivan for two weeks (the horror). My policy only covered like $30 a day, but even the smallest car at Enterprise was more than that. Not sure who these insurance folks think rents cars that cheap anymore. I started double-checking those limits after that mess - definitely worth it if you don’t wanna end up cruising in a 2005 Odyssey.

I’m literally staring at my quote now and it’s the same - $30/day max. Is there some secret to getting a higher cap? Or is it just “pay more, get more”? Kinda wild they haven’t updated these numbers since, what, 2008?

Yeah, it’s wild how out of touch those limits are. I remember when $30/day actually covered a basic rental, but now? Not even close. I’ve asked my agent about bumping it up and, surprise, it’s just more money tacked onto your premium. Makes me wonder - has anyone actually done the math on whether it’s worth it, or is it just another way for insurers to squeeze us? Also, what happens if you need a car for longer than your policy covers? That part always makes me nervous...

Yeah, I’ve run into this too and honestly, it’s kind of frustrating. Last summer, my car was in the shop for almost two weeks and my insurance only covered a rental for 5 days at $30/day. Ended up paying out of pocket for the rest - wasn’t cheap. I did the math on raising my limit, but the extra premium felt steep compared to what I’d actually save unless my car was out of commission for ages. Makes me think it’s mostly just peace-of-mind pricing… not really worth it if you’re on a tight budget. The time limit thing is what really gets me though - if your repair drags on, you’re just stuck.
