Do insurers also ask whether the car is used for business, and how do they distinguish an occasional personal errand from regular paid deliveries?

I’m also curious whether adding racks or other carrying modifications can affect the vehicle’s rating or eligibility, even if the trips are personal. The application wording seems like the key, but what terms or questions should a commuter pay particular attention to?

I’m comparing usage-based insurance programs and trying to work out the real cost before enrolling. The quoted discount looks attractive, but I’m more concerned about how the driving score is calculated and whether a poor score can increase the premium at renewal.

For example, how much weight do insurers typically give to hard braking, rapid acceleration, speeding, and frequent night driving? I also wonder whether estimated annual mileage matters separately from the telematics score. Someone driving 5,000 miles a year mostly during daylight could be assessed very differently from someone driving 12,000 miles with regular late-night trips, even if both have clean claims records.

The privacy terms are another concern. Do these programs collect precise trip locations, or only mileage, time of day, and driving behavior? How long is the data retained, and can it be used for underwriting or shared beyond calculating the discount?

For those who have requested a quote, did the insurer clearly state whether the program is discount-only, meaning the premium cannot rise because of the score? If there is no such guarantee, did the potential savings justify accepting the possibility of a higher renewal price? I’d appreciate examples based on the policy terms or quote language insurers provided.

I had a couple speeding tickets a few years back - nothing crazy, just your typical "running late to work" kinda stuff - and one minor fender bender that wasn't even really my fault (but try telling that to the insurance company, right?). Anyway, I figured after a few years of clean driving they'd cut me some slack.

Turns out, nope. My quotes are still way higher than my brother's, and he's had zero incidents ever. I mean, I get it... sorta. But how long does this stuff stick around? Feels like I'm being punished forever for a couple dumb mistakes from ages ago.

Curious if anyone else has noticed this too or if maybe I'm just unlucky with the companies I've checked out so far.
