Honestly, I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for these systems to “get” island life. Here’s the thing:

- Algorithms are built for averages, not outliers. Chickens, goats, random potholes—none of that fits their model.
- Most telematics data is crunched by folks who’ve never driven a mile here. They don’t know what it’s like dodging wild pigs at dusk.
- Even if they tweak the system, there’s always going to be something it misses. Local quirks just aren’t on their radar.

I get why people want smarter tech, but right now? It’s still pretty tone-deaf to how we actually drive out here.

I hear you on the algorithms missing the mark out here. My old ‘72 Bronco doesn’t exactly play nice with those telematics gadgets anyway—half the time they think I’m driving reckless just because I swerve around a pothole or slow down for a stray dog. The folks setting these rates really don’t get how unpredictable island roads are. Still, I’ve found that calling local agents and having an actual conversation gets me better deals than any online “smart” quote ever did. Sometimes old-school works best.
