Adding a teen driver in Hawaii: bundle with parents or separate policy?

I totally get the peace of mind angle, but man, those bundled policies can get pricey - especially out here. Has anyone actually had to use umbrella coverage with a teen driver? I keep hearing about it, but I’m not sure how often it really comes into play. My cousin split his policy for his son and saved a chunk, but yeah, he did mention the claims process was kind of a headache. Is it really that much worse if you’re not all on one plan? Just trying to figure out if the savings are worth the risk or if I’m just being cheap...

I’m right there with you about the price jump. When my daughter got her license, our insurance almost doubled with her on the family plan. I’ve wondered about umbrella coverage too, but honestly, does it really get used that much? Seems like overkill unless your teen is driving a lot or you’ve got major assets to protect.

About splitting policies - my neighbor did that for her son. She said the paperwork was a pain and they had some confusion over who covered what after a fender bender. Makes me wonder if saving up front is worth the hassle later, or if I’m just being paranoid about “worst case” stuff. Anyone actually have an umbrella claim pay out?

I get where you’re coming from. We bundled our son with us when he started driving, and yeah, the premium spike was rough. But honestly, dealing with one policy has been way less stressful than trying to juggle separate ones. I’ve never had to use umbrella coverage myself, but a friend did after a pretty bad accident - turns out it saved them from a lawsuit headache. Still, if your assets aren’t huge, it might be more peace of mind than necessity.

- Bundling made sense for us too, even though the price hike was a shock at first.
- Tried to compare separate policies, but the paperwork and tracking payments just seemed like a hassle.
- Our agent mentioned umbrella coverage, but honestly, we don’t have a ton of assets, so I skipped it for now.
- One thing I noticed - our rates dropped a bit after a year with no claims or tickets, so it’s not all bad news.
- If your teen’s driving record stays clean, bundling might actually work out cheaper long-term.

Did anyone actually see a big difference in coverage options when bundling? I’ve always wondered if the classic car policies play nice with family bundles, or if they’re better off separate. Also, has anyone tried adding a teen to a collector policy, or is that just asking for trouble?
