Finding decent car insurance in Delaware without losing your mind

I started keeping screenshots of emails and texts after my last claim turned into a nightmare. It’s wild how fast they “forget” what was said unless you’ve got proof. Has anyone actually found a specialty insurer in Delaware that doesn’t make you jump through hoops? I feel like I’m missing something obvious...

That’s honestly the smartest move - screenshots have saved me more than once. I haven’t found a specialty insurer in Delaware that’s truly hassle-free, but here’s what’s worked for me: I keep a running spreadsheet of every call and email, with dates and names. It sounds tedious, but it’s helped when things get messy. Also, double-check if your agent is independent or tied to one company - sometimes the independents can shop around for you and cut down on the back-and-forth. It’s not perfect, but it beats starting from scratch every time something goes sideways.

I hear you on the spreadsheet thing - it’s a lifesaver, even if I feel like a detective half the time. I’ve had agents “misremember” what they promised more than once, and having dates/names handy definitely changes the tone of those calls. I do wish the process was less of a headache, though. Independent agents have been hit or miss for me, but at least they’re not locked in with one company. Guess it’s just part of the Delaware insurance circus...

Spreadsheet’s the only way I’ve kept my sanity dealing with these folks. I swear, half the time I’m reminding them what they said last week. It’s like they hope you’ll forget the details and just go along with whatever new rate or “fee” pops up. Independent agents are a mixed bag for me too - sometimes you get one who actually cares, but I’ve had a few who just bounce between companies and never really explain the fine print. At least you can shop around, but it’s still a pain.

Honestly, Delaware insurance feels like a game where the rules change every year. Last renewal, my rate jumped for no reason - no claims, nothing changed. Called three agents and got three different stories. If I didn’t keep notes, I’d have no clue what was going on. It shouldn’t be this complicated just to drive legally... but here we are.

I get where you’re coming from, but I actually had a different experience with independent agents here. Maybe I just lucked out, but the last one I worked with was upfront about every fee and even walked me through the renewal process line by line. It was a lot less stressful than trying to decipher the company’s website or waiting on hold for hours. I do agree, though - rates in Delaware are all over the place. Mine went up last year too, and when I pressed for an explanation, I got the classic “market conditions” answer. Not super helpful.

Keeping a spreadsheet is smart, but I’d add that sometimes calling the insurer directly (not just the agent) can clear up some of the confusion. They’re not always more transparent, but at least you get things in writing. Still, it’s wild how much legwork it takes just to avoid getting blindsided by random fees or rate hikes...
