Why can’t I use my points AND a coupon at checkout?
Honestly, I don’t get why people act like it’s some big mystery every time. I’ve worked retail before (not gas stations, but still), and there’s usually a pretty clear policy about stacking rewards and coupons. Most places just say no - either one or the other, not both. But then you get those cashiers who look at you like you’re trying to hack the system, when really, you’re just trying to save a couple bucks.
I had a similar thing happen at a grocery store when I tried using a digital coupon with my student discount. The cashier didn’t even try to scan both - just flat out said “can’t do it.” No explanation, nothing. I asked why, and she just shrugged and said “store rules.” It kind of annoys me that it’s so inconsistent. Some days you get someone who’ll try to make it work for you, other days they act like you’re robbing the place.
But honestly, I don’t blame the employees as much as the companies. They make these rewards programs sound amazing in their ads, but then bury all the “cannot be combined” fine print in the app or on some weird page nobody reads. Feels like they want us confused so we just give up and pay full price.
I get that policies are policies, but if they don’t want people using both, just make the system reject it automatically instead of making everyone feel awkward at checkout. At least then we’d all know where we stand instead of rolling the dice every time.
Anyway, I’ve stopped even bothering with coupons unless it’s something big. Too much hassle for a few cents off when half the time they won’t let you use them together anyway.
- Had the same thing happen at a gas station last week. Tried to use my points and a paper coupon, cashier just said, “System won’t let me.” No explanation, just a blank stare.

100% agree. It’s like they want us to get our hopes up and then pull the rug out.“They make these rewards programs sound amazing in their ads, but then bury all the ‘cannot be combined’ fine print in the app or on some weird page nobody reads.”
- Honestly, I don’t get why the register can’t just say “nope” instead of making it awkward for everyone. Would save time and confusion.
- I still try sometimes, but it’s always a gamble. Usually not worth the hassle for a few cents.
Yeah, it’s frustrating how the systems are set up. From what I’ve seen, the register software just isn’t flexible enough to stack discounts, even if the cashier wanted to help. It’s usually coded with strict rules - either points or coupon, not both. I wish they’d make it clearer at the start instead of letting people find out after waiting in line. Honestly, I’ve stopped trying unless I know for sure it’ll work... saves a lot of hassle.

Seriously, that’s the worst part. I used to get burned by this all the time - spend ten minutes digging for my loyalty card, then pull out a coupon, only to hear “Sorry, it’s one or the other.” Now I just ask right away if I can stack them before I even start unloading my stuff. Saves me a headache. If they say no, I just pick whichever gives me the bigger discount and move on. No point fighting with the register.
I get what you’re saying, but honestly, I’m still not convinced it’s just about “policy.” Feels more like they want to keep us jumping through hoops so we don’t actually use all the discounts we’ve earned. I mean, why bother offering both points and coupons if you can’t combine them? It’s like handing out two keys and then telling you only one works for the door. Makes no sense.
I’ve had cashiers who didn’t even know the rule themselves - one time, the poor guy tried scanning my coupon and points card three different ways before finally calling over a manager. Whole line behind me was giving me the stink eye, like I was holding up their day on purpose. Not exactly how I want to spend my lunch break.
Now, I just assume stacking isn’t allowed unless I see it in writing. If they surprise me and let both go through, hey, that’s a win. But yeah, it’d be way less frustrating if they just put a sign up at the register or something. Or even better, print it right on the coupon in giant letters: “Cannot be combined with loyalty points.” At least then you know what you’re getting into before you start playing discount roulette.
Still, I get that stores have to draw the line somewhere. They’re probably trying to avoid people walking out with half the store for free. But man, sometimes it feels like they’re making it harder than it needs to be.
