Why California’s minimum car insurance might not be enough

I feel like the insurance companies bank on us being anxious about worst-case scenarios, but maybe that’s just me being skeptical...

I get the skepticism, but I actually know someone who had to pay out of pocket when their coverage ran out after a pretty basic accident. It wasn’t even a fancy car - just a newer Accord - but the other driver’s medical bills and repairs went over the minimums. They ended up on the hook for a few grand. I guess it’s easy to feel like you’re paying for nothing, but the risk is real, especially with how expensive everything is now. I’d rather be a little over-insured than risk getting stuck with a bill I can’t handle.

I keep going back and forth on this. Part of me thinks the insurance companies are just upselling, but then I hear stories like yours and it makes me nervous. It’s wild how fast costs add up after even a minor accident. Maybe being “over-insured” isn’t such a bad thing after all...

- Had a fender bender last year - barely a scratch on my car, but the other guy’s bumper sensors and paint job cost a fortune.
- My policy covered it, but if I’d had just the minimum, I’d have been out of pocket for thousands.
- With luxury cars, even minor repairs are crazy expensive. Sensors, cameras, specialty paint... it adds up fast.
- I used to think extra coverage was just a sales pitch, but honestly, it’s saved me more than once.
- Not saying everyone needs max coverage, but for higher-end cars, the peace of mind is worth it.

I get where you’re coming from, but honestly, I’ve always stuck close to the minimum and never had any major issues. Maybe it’s luck or just driving older cars, but the extra monthly cost adds up too. Not everyone’s dealing with luxury vehicles, you know?

- Seen plenty of claims where the minimum didn’t even cover half the damage, even on older cars.
- Medical bills alone can blow past those limits fast.
- Ever had to pay out-of-pocket after an accident? That’s where people get hit hardest. Just curious - have you ever been in a multi-car pileup or anything like that?
